28th December 2008 - 3rd January 2009
Flight
over was fine until Dubai, when Mr Miserable Arab got on next to Steve. Steve
noticed this guy had a body odour problem, did not like to be disturbed when we
wanted to go walkabout on plane and at one point actually stood up and shouted
at the small 2year old girl in the seats in front because she was looking over
the top of her seat. No sleep but 7 films later we arrive.
Got
to Hotel and crashed for 4 hours before going out and looking for someplace to
go and watch fireworks. Everywhere closed as most Australians get out picnic
tables, chairs, BBQ’s and enough food and drink to last the 12 hours they are
prepared to wait for the celebrations. We find the world famous Harry’s Pie’s
on wheels and Steve has a Curry pie topped with Ketchup, Mash, Mushy peas and
Gravy. Began to feed some of it to the ducks but the fish attacked them and ate
it……
Steve’s
last meal in 2008
Strike
it lucky with Steve asking, can we go in there to a Navy Security guard, yes he
says for £10. In we go and wow, possibly one of the best places to be, straight
opposite the bridge with an unobstructed view. Just a bit of positioning in
front/alongside the I own every bit of this floor space Australian woman and we
see in the new year.
Next
day we go walkabout and on a train to take in the sights, buy a new spam
protector for Steve and get back rather tired at 4pm intending to have a quick doze,
but wake up at 7 o’clock the following morning instead…..
Off to Bondi and see all the pretty people,
one of us feels so at home……
Sydney the morning after Bondi Babe
Saturday
and we set off to pick up the van, first problem, rail works on the line, have
to get a bus service, second problem, van hire co too busy to come and pick us
up but no worries as we watch the Cockatoo‘s flying around us, third problem,
‘HOW MUCH’ the Insurance for the van, fourth problem, 2 ½ hours to be shown
around the van and do the paperwork. Off we go, whoops, bump, took that corner
a bit tight and set off to the Blue Mountains. We decide to get sorted and then
do the tourist bit tomorrow. Get to the bottle shop and buy some wine, ahhh Go
shopping and get some Special K, ahhh. Decide to look for the campsite, find it
book a space. Next stop Dinner, research the options and find them, Snobby
Steve says No to the first 3 as they look like cafes. Let’s go in here he says,
an Italian, we cannot go wrong. Within the hour Steve has learnt a very
important lesson, he can be wrong in Australia. It’s a CafĂ© purporting to be an
Italian, you pay for the meal before you get it and having tasted his lasagne,
Steve knows why….. We sat in a seat to one side, then found it to be next to
the water tap, where everyone comes to get their water in plastic jugs, yuck.
Julies steak was great but she had to share it almost with a child in his
pyjamas, climbing on the table whilst his father waited for a takeaway pizza.
They were not licensed to sell alcohol so Steve had a coffee in a glass bucket
that tasted like watered down milk. We leave most of the meal, laughing about
the place and head for home, the campsite. We settle down and now Steve thinks,
‘I’m not sure about this’ where is the wine I bought. We head off for the
toilets and showers to examine them before wanting to use them and Nightmare
city, loads of foreigners, weirdo’s and hippies . Quick back to the van, lock
ourselves in and get some sleep, I mean it is Saturday night, we are on holiday
and it’s almost half eight…….
Blue Mountains
The
early night means we are awake early in the morning, good job as the
kookaburras would have woken us anyway. Off to the Blue Mountains and Julie is
in love again, with the scenery and sounds from the birds in the forest canopy.
Climb down to see one of the three stone sisters and then take twice as much
time to climb back up. Off to Wentworth falls and see our first waterfall of
the holiday, decide against climbing down to see it close up as we remember the
last climb back up….. Now we are used to the van we set off on the route we
decided would take us around Australia. 5 miles down the road and we come to a
shuddering stop as Julie has seen UGG BOOTS for half price, one3 pair later we
resume our journey to Shoalhaven, NSW.
